Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil hits theaters on September 18, 2026. The film is an original survival horror story set during the events of Resident Evil 2, following a medical courier named Bryan (Austin Abrams) through a T-virus outbreak in Raccoon City.

There was a time when a genuinely faithful Resident Evil film adaptation felt like pure fantasy. After years of Paul W.S. Anderson’s action-heavy blockbuster films that had a complicated relationship with the source material, the idea of a game-literate director actually caring about survival horror seemed almost too good to be true. And yet, here we are.

Zach Cregger, the director behind Barbarian and last year’s Weapons, is bringing Capcom’s flagship horror franchise back to its roots. The film drops September 18, and anticipation among genre fans is at a fever pitch. Early tracking suggests it’s poised to shatter every domestic box office record the franchise has ever set.

So, what do we actually know? Quite a bit, as it turns out. Let’s break it down.

How Zach Cregger end up directing Resident Evil?

The origin story here is genuinely great. While Cregger was filming Barbarian in Bulgaria, producer Roy Lee asked him a simple question: what video game franchise would he want to adapt? Cregger’s answer was Resident Evil.

After Barbarian became a sleeper hit, Cregger pitched his survival horror concept to Constantin Film. He co-wrote the script with John Wick: Chapter 4 scribe Shay Hatten, writing it freely under the assumption that the studio would hire someone else to direct. They didn’t. Cregger got the chair.

What makes this origin matter is what it tells you about his approach. This isn’t a filmmaker who was hired simply to direct a polished franchise script.  Cregger is, by his own admission is a Resident Evil super fan and that distinction shapes everything about what this film appears to be.

What is the plot of Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil?

The film follows Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams (Euphoria), who is tasked with delivering a package to Raccoon City General Hospital during the initial T-virus outbreak. The events take place concurrently with Resident Evil 2, updated to the modern day rather than the game’s 1998 setting, as Raccoon City descends into chaos during a winter blizzard.

Crucially, the story begins outside Raccoon City. According to early reactions from a 30-minute sneak preview event, the terrifying preview ended before Bryan had even made it into the city limits. That detail alone tells you everything about the film’s pacing ambitions.

Cregger has described the experience as a “lean and mean 95 minutes,” structured to follow one person from Point A to Point B without narrative trickery. His goal? To “floor it at minute six and not take my foot off the gas.” No legacy characters from the games — Leon Kennedy fans, brace yourselves — but the Umbrella Corporation and the T-virus are very much present and accounted for.

How does the film translate Resident Evil’s gameplay to the screen?

This is where Cregger’s fan credentials really show. Resource management — the agonizing discipline of rationing ammo, tracking health, and making every bullet count — is one of the defining mechanics of the Resident Evil games. Cregger didn’t want to leave that tension on the screen room floor.

The film keeps the audience “keenly aware” of Bryan’s health and supplies throughout. As Cregger put it: “You will know how many bullets are in his gun. YOU will care when he misses a shot.” The pacing itself draws from Resident Evil 4 — his most-played game in the series — while the scares channel the claustrophobic first-person dread of Resident Evil 7. That’s a combination that should have fans extremely optimistic.

What monsters and creatures will appear in the film?

Here’s where the film gets genuinely interesting and a little divisive. Cregger has confirmed that the T-virus in his adaptation introduces behavioral mutations not seen in the Capcom games. He’s been careful to frame it as an expansion rather than a contradiction: “I don’t think they break the rules of the games, but you’ll see unique behavioral things about the way the T-virus works that the games don’t do.”

The most talked-about new creation? A creature Cregger describes as a “giant human tumbleweed.” To bring it to life, the production hired physical performers, including Cirque du Soleil artists, to study and approximate realistic rolling movement.

Don’t expect over-the-top video game monsters like Mr. X in his iconic trenchcoat. Cregger has gone on record saying the film won’t lean into overtly “videogamey” creature designs, focusing instead on more grounded horror zombies, mutated animals, and these new T-virus variants. A TV spot has already given us a first look at a mutated zombie dog, which feels very on-brand.

Where does Resident Evil fit in Cregger’s wider filmography?

During a Reddit AMA, Cregger revealed that Resident Evil was written during the same creative burst that produced Weapons and his upcoming thriller The Flood — all three connected by recurring themes and a similar energy. If early reactions carry any weight, that means the film balances absurdist humor with relentless dread in roughly the same proportion as Weapons.

The supporting cast backs up the ambition: Zach Cherry (Severance), Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country), Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird), and Johnno Wilson (Twisted Metal) all appear alongside Abrams. That’s a lineup built for a serious horror film.

September 18 Can’t Come Fast Enough

Cregger has said he feels like he’s been “running for office” trying to win over skeptical Resident Evil fans. You can hear both the exhaustion and the conviction in how he talks about the project: “I’m making the Resident Evil movie that I wish existed.”

For a franchise that has spent decades frustrating the very fanbase that loves it most, that statement carries real weight. Early tracking points to a franchise-record domestic opening. The 30-minute preview has generated genuine excitement. And a filmmaker with Cregger’s track record a director who turned a Bulgarian rental property into one of the most effective horror setups in recent memory brings serious credibility to the table.

September 18 is the verdict. But everything we know so far suggests this might be the Resident Evil film the games always deserved. Only time will tell.
